Present Simple Tense

This is used
- for habitual activities, usually with adverbs like 'always','often','never', 'sometimes', etc.

Examples:

She always eats at that restaurant.

They never come to visit us.


- for universal statement

Examples:

Mammals are warm-blooded animals

The moon orbits the earth.


- to express an action taking place at the moment of speaking (especially in commentaries)

Examples:

The dancers flit gracefullyacross the stages as the audience watch, enthralled.


- in the 'if' clause of a conditional sentence to show a likely event

Examples:

If you keep your ears open, you might hear the nightingale.

If they don't come soon, we shall have to leave without them.


- for directions

Examples:

Take the first turning on your left and go right down to leave without them.


- when a future time reference is fixe, usually with words like 'when', 'until', 'if', 'unless', etc.

Examples:

He will come over if he is free.

They won't go unless we do
