This used
- For completed actions with or without the mention of a specific time

For Examples
He told me to come and see you.
They left for Johor earlier

- in the 'if' clause of a conditional sentence, to show an unlikely event

For Examples
What would you do if you saw a ghost
If he already knew, he would not have asked.

- to indicate a past habit, usually with adverbs like 'always', 'often', 'never', etc.

For Examples
I always used to go to the park every Sunday when I was younger.
We often went swimming every evening when we were in primary school.

- to replace the present simple in indirect speech

For Examples

Direct: He said " I am hungry."
Indirect: He said he was hungry
